Sippin on air…Yoga of relationship

Have you ever been reminded in your yoga class whilst deep in asana?…”Don’t be just sipping on air…”.  You consciously take huge breath in ..the intensity of the pose softens, your face relaxes and once again the energy becomes alive and starts coursing through your body.

I reflect how this is often a metaphor of how we live a life when we slip into unconscious states within our minds of living below our edge. The great African leader, Nelson Mandela  reminds us powerfully in his famous speech,  our greatest fears lie in living up into the light of who we are.  Why are we only sipping on air?  For many it is rooted in fears and ignorance.  It is like we are functioning on one channel, afraid or don’t know how to switch… when really there is a cable network available.  We need to remind each other…” don’t be sipping…so much more available.”

In our recent psychology class, we as therapists of often dealing with clients in troubled and lost states.   I remind that as awakened individuals we are in powerful states to support each other, by rising out of negative states into powerful realisations of the clarity, equanimity, spaciousness and joy that is our true nature.  To be fully supportive of each other we need to encompass two aspects.  One is empathy..to really feel the pain of the other, to hear the story, to feel the intensity of their suffering and breathe with them there.  It is here we realise the safety, the support and  the absence of aloneness.

The second is to rise up into your greater state of awareness. This is to take a real deep breath of air in every way.  For one simple moment the reality (Channel) may change and what is possibly offered to another is a mirror. A mirror that sees with clarity that they are trapped. There is no pushing, pulling or grabbing.  No need to validate your truth. We simply offer our friend ‘an environment. ‘  An environment without needs, without solutions…simply breathing deeper to allow a possible expanded awareness to evolve.  An environment of quiet spaciousness…An environment that sees they are caught (and caught by their own Mind).  The beauty of this therapy, is that the expansion happens not only for your friend but yourself also.

In summation..there are Two pieces of the offering..1. Empathy..we are all in this together..2. BUT we don’t need to be caught..

This is not only  a deepening breath that alters your asana…this is a powerful realisation that possibly creates a expanded reality.  A reality that is quiet, clear, spacious, happy and free.  It requires patience and balance.  For me this is Yoga.  The yoga of Relationship.

Hand in Hand … Zenthai newsletter …winter 2012…

During our recent ‘ open day’ at Mt. Ninderry I asked all to join me in a “Zen” walking meditation around the property cultivating presence, massaging the land with our feet, giving and receiving to/ from the earth, slowing down,  observing/ feeling the minute treasures we often miss and finalising the exercise with giving a close by tree a huge hug.

I like to close the sessions with a feedback circle..’ The power of many awakened eyes’ where we all get a chance to share our insights.  One participant shared how when she hugged the tree it it appeared she was ‘glued’ and received so much back.  Another revealed the potency and emotion of ‘feeling’ like she had not for a long time became  profound experience for her.  The final sharing was how much she simply enjoyed the final circle where we simply stood in the bush in a large circle holding each others hands and expressing from our hearts. All, reminders to us of the boundless gifts that come to us when we authentically give from simply a pure and present place.  Last week I walked in the rain (very slowly)  holding my 84 yr old Mother – in -law hand.  Her continual squeezing reminding me the joy she was receiving from my simple touch. In simply holding another’s hand the wonderful act of giving and receiving is in full dial mode allowing both to feel the gifts of boundless energy in ‘free’ flow.Early this morning as I paddled the canoe up the river I watched in awe as a huge eagle , wings abreast magnificently soared above the water using the updraft of wind from the water to allow it to soar in an effortless grace. The gifts I received from simply observation of a spectacle of grace, harmony and connectedness remained with me all day. The eagle, simply allowing nature to sync with its movement, was passing on subtle gifts to me beyond comprehension. Unknowingly this large beautiful bird was giving me so much by simply allowing a Full expression of it’s own divine nature….we too can do the same…

May we all take time to recognise this abundant flow of giving and receiving by touching with presence, observing with detachment, expressing our Beingness ‘fully ‘and fueling ourselves with nature’s simple yet precious messages.

Surrender…

The flight to Bali is 24 hrs behind…the class of 25 students are all on their way and i am meant to start the circle in less than 2 days time. I freak at first , then Surrender ..the following flow is gentle and seamless..we get red carpet treatment at a 5 star hotel on Brissy’s Southbank, the flight is full of spare seats so we lie down and sleep. When we arrive at the village the following day, the perfect number of rooms are spare for the group and the opening circle reveals a wonderful group of souls with many hearts already wide open.

The first class of yoga..is daunting fro some as we have such a wide variety of participants. Some yoga teachers, with a practice of over 10 years, for others it is their first yoga class ever. I make it clear that YOGA..is Your yoga…it is the journey and the tuning into your moment with breath, mind and body thats makes yoga something we can practice on and off the mat…The goal of being in some perfected asana may take us away from yoga. Faces soften. bodies relax..i feel surrender as many gain a clearer perspective of yoga. ‘Surrender is being fully in the moment’ states Neen Karoli Baba. Yes …we can surrender right now.

The night before the Nyepi day of silence is a Nyepi celebration at the village temple beside the surfbreak. We dress in Sarongs, headwear and flowers and join the 300 plus villagers at the sacred ceremony where a cow is slaughtered and given up as an offfering. As we walk home on dusk many participants are attempting to bypass the ‘ slaughter’ and all the ‘gruesome ‘ that goes with it. However, all rice paddy tracks are closed as we try to depart , and we need to cross the river …where as you may anticipate is the offerring being cleaned in the stream. The group ‘surrenders,’ let’s go of the fear and walks through the pack of villagers busy at work. Life.death, ceremony, community and REMEMBERING OF GOD… all alive in a  lesson for all..The group reminds each other of the small but potent packages to expand our awareness are alive not only in this simple village but in every experience when we surrender and listen.

Kevin has us all sounding together,as the group closes the circle with a final, deep resonating OM …I feel nothing but Gratitude for what all Have Embraced over the week we share together. The faces on many look ten years younger. Maybe it has been from the river of tears that have flowed freely. Maybe it was from that one hug at the perfect time. Maybe it is from that spontaneous smile that happenned when the two sets of eyes met each other. Now some are ready for a full week of YOGA, dance and music at the magical Bali spirit Festival  or others the solitude of a deserted Amed beach. Now we are faced with choices..” where to go?” ..Like when we leave our yoga mat from the guidance and connectedness of a class..Surrender now takes a less passive form whilst life takes a new canvas. Intuition may be surrender in its active state.  “Intuition is to be in tune with oneself, totally in tune with oneself. And out of that tuning, solutions arise from Nowhere”.. Osho

When our circumstance is  a busy Ubud street..which bemo? which restaurant? which class? Sensory stimulation overload simply indicates many channels are operating at once.. Tuning in allows us to align with the right one. This is also where our practice serves us. Our practice of making the moment to moment choices to live in greater harmony with one’s truth and divine essence  …An expanded awareness truly is something we all have the choice to take with us.

An embrace retreat will always brings up ‘STUFF’ ..some of it painful. some not, all revealing. Maybe now we can encourage all to stop look at things and begin looking at looking..with honesty and clarity. Maybe now we can change aspects of our BEING . we wish to change. Maybe now we can Embrace the full depth of “Surrender “Not a surrender that is lost and defeated, but simply a surrender that is completely immersed in a loving presence.

‘Surrender is being Lost in Love.’..Mahara-ji

Namaste from Thailand

I am on the streets outside the Chiang Mai airport waving down a tuk tuk ..within 5 mins one has stopped.  In goes the back pack, feet up on the rail..we barter the price with a bit of light hearted humour and i am off …this small but significant ritual marking the start of the years Asian adventure.

Later that night i am feasting at Blue Diamond on what i declare the best organic vegetarian cafe in South east Asia…delicious.

The following day Arno, looking light and fresh, meets me at the airport in high spirits.. The 40 min trip to the Thai circus land is full of news …nearly all good…very good. The 42 students from 20 different countries around the world all totally enthused… young, vibrant and spirited…in love with the land , the waterfall, the practice and each other…. When i arrive they are all in dance mode …full moon energy, music and lots of sweetness between all.

The land has really established itself over the past two and half years ..The.originally challenging toilet/ shower setup, the saunas, the trees and kitchen… all revamped,  despite a mass of rain that happenned midyear (like many places in the world) that wiped out  a few structures and apparently caused a lot of damage. Time and experience has many benefits re. more organisation and hygiene, hence the years of many experienceing Asian dysentry for one month, rushing to the squat dunny between sessions,  is slowly disappearing..yay.

The local Lao still remain virtually absent for the course due to the English language being so alien to them. The two English words i have interchanged since being here was a big “HELLO” to a young 10 year old as we high fived on my morning run. The other was from an older villager who daily waters the vege garden full of lettuce and tomatoes we are all feasting on. He looks at his phone, checking the date, then looks at me as says ” Valentine”…
” You little beauty” I exclaim, ” You KNOW!”

I point to a flower on the tree trying to inform him to bring a flower home to his wife. He checks out the flower , whether it is eatable or not…then dismisses the matter. These guys honestly eat everything.!! The huge rats are given to each other as gifts to feast on, the cockroaches, bugs, and insects risk their lifes if they show their heads, knowing if detected, their legs will be ripped off and they are thrown into the boiling soup pot. The local circus dog that was with us last year, we discover was part of a feast in the challenging wet season.

Today we venture across the river to a nearby rice field. In a circle, we practice breathing and exercise as the sun rises over a wonderful landscape of mountain and greenery , all encompassing a magnificent open and expansive clear blue sky. I look around at the sea of faces falling in love with this amazing spectrum of the human rainbow, so unique yet so connected in the true centre. The cloaks we have worn in the past vary from mechanics, builders, waiters, laboratory scientists, yoga teachers, shamanic dancers to jet pilots, physiotherapists, trainee doctors and professional musicans. Here today,in the Jungle of Laos we simply learn and practice Thai massage, Therapies and Yoga and encouraged to remember that presence and loving kindness are the human gifts that we all need to continually enrich and share. At the end of the morning circle an unassuming American student, who rarely speaks, steps into the middle of 50 students and erupts into song…completely unbridled.. he shares with totality from his deepest core ..we all follow..and within minute the entire circle are following him joyfully, with his heartful words and tunes…not wishing to stop.

Human BEINGNESS…..i love it..

Blessings to you for 2012

Namaste

Happy New Year to all..yes it appears 2012 is one full of powerful waves. Waves that move ..hopefully moving us into… more alive states of joy, deeper states of connection with each other and nudging us back on track when we waver of our daily path of inner peace. …

The young 4 month old boy in my ARMS .. a delightful reminder of  innocence and raw beauty …iam so immersed in the purity..you can not express the words ..just softly squeeze the arms and make weird noises at the smiling alive face. The young babe, Pasco yearns for nothing, it is all with him right now in his simple contented state.  The loving father takes his babe from my arms ….’ How are you little chop?? ” so in love with his own, the words of adoration seem to naturally flow..I am in stitches with tearful joy ..the tears rolling down my face…

Days later i walk into the Nataraja temple in celebration of Yogananda’s birthday. Again the saturation of humaness in its pure and natural state drops me into a complete awakedness of the love and joy we all are beyond the conditionings and delusions that we are separate.  Magnetised  by the poetic and consuming words of Paramhansa I am powerfully reminded in moments of powerfully deep silence, the same message  from Pasco…that everything we ever yearn for is with us right now ..The silence in the group is so rich as we all dive down forgetting each others dreams thus connecting with a purity and beauty that remains alive in us all.

AS it often is in Human life…my wonderful reflection of Humans and our awakened journeys remains on high..until visting  a local waterhole days later..many people , families…etc..a little lost in their dreams..swearing, drinking , smoking  and shouting…My vibrational high begins to slip as i step into a judgemental and pessimistic slide..however iam  nudged slowly back into awakedness by my wife Gaia, reminding myself  of the Divine order that pervades all things, the light behind the eyes of the passer by on the bush track, the loving and mysterious intelligence that emanates from the centre of creation although not so obvious in this scenerio does not mean it does not exist. I look a little deeper for these truths and  the waterhole scene slowly takes on a new colour. A great reminder for me is what we assume, expect or believe creates and colours our experience. By expanding our deepest beliefs about what is possible, we change our experience of life. i will allow Pasco’s( the little chop) smiling eyes and our Rich silence at Yogananda’s birthday celebration to inspire us in the fact that what we focus on is what expands…and the importance of creating new visions for the 2012 …as this is what we will become..

In conclusion i would like to share our Zenthai group’s  annual Woodfordi breakfast where we  summarised words that embraced  visions for 2012..may they inspire us all when we tend to ‘forget’,or waver from our path, keeping us reminded of each day’s amazing potential…

Amanda says…

“I fell in love with Zenthai Shiatsu after receiving a treatment from Gwyn at Mt Ninderry Healing Centre, Yandina. My mind and heart were inspired by IMG_5579the movement and flow of the therapy. As an athlete, physical movement has always been one of my highest values. Seeing this movement offered through a massage therapy resonated with me and my focus on supporting people in their healing journey.

I began studying with Gwyn in 2009 and have thoroughly enjoyed offering Zenthai Shiatsu to people who are looking for support on their journey to better health, healing and vitality. My role in facilitating the healing process includes connecting people to their bodies and energy. As a therapist I also assist people to better understand their bodies and how they can heal themselves through mindful breath and movement.”

What others are saying:
IMG_5556I have been receiving Amanda Living zen thai massages for over 5 years. I started having issues with my lower back after years of equestrian. My back issues continues once I joined the police service. Regular visits to Amanda living zen thai massage has been a great benefit, it has almost eliminated my back issues & made conducting my job & day to day activities much easier & pain free. I highly recommend Amanda Living zen thai massage.

Amanda LIVING’S  Zen thai Shiatsu Massage is a massage experience that all busy ,sore bodies would  benefit from and want more of. Enjoy  her wonderful massage. Amanda comes Highly recommended.

Dr Ping Jaa MBBS FRACGP DRANCOG FACNEM

On my first visit to Amanda I was suffering with a sciatic nerve problem in my thigh and leg. I was nervous about going, but soon realized after my first message that Zen Thai Shiatsu massage is different to any I have experienced before and I came away feeling much better and in far less pain. Zen Thai Shiatsu massage is a mix of stretching and massage that has improved my general overall well-being and I have continued to have a Zen Thai Shiatsu massage with Amanda every two to three weeks. Amanda seems to instinctively find the ‘tight spots’ that need stretching and has loosened up the joints and simply makes me feel more mobile afterwards. I would recommend Amanda for anyone looking for passionate person who has a love and dedication for her work in Zen Thai Shiatsu massage.
This is truly an amazing experience that I was wary about in the beginning, but now knowing how well I feel after my massage I always look forward to my next visit.

Over the next decade I worked, studied & completed 5 levels of Kahuna Bodywork, Pregnancy Massage, Healing Hands Chair Massage & Hot Rocks Therapy.  I had my first Zenthai Shiatsu treatment with a very dear friend of mine in 2011 & felt a deep passion to incorporate this incredible healing practice into my world & so began training with my humble teacher Gwyn Williams.

Having completed my studies in December 2012 I now look forward to creating a beautiful dance between these two healing modalities and sharing ths joy-filled practice within our beautiful community & with family & friends.”

2013 bio shots 018“I have had many massages from Carmen and I highly recommend her. She is very thorough and connects with your body, as to what you need to have done.  She has excellent hands and it is all done with love.”

Delia M Lane – Client.

“I have been massaged by Carmen Walker for approximately 14 years. Putting it quite simply Carmenis a healer of the highest order. She is compassionate and creative. Her uncanny ability to intuit my physical and subtle body is next to none. I have on many occasions brought a worn out body to Carmenand she has managed to transform me through a journey of stretches, deep tissue massage and the channelling of powerful healing energy. She is tireless in her commitment to the process of wellness for others and herself. Like great healers Carmen also keeps herself in check with her raw ability to be honest and also kind. I admire her tenacity for this and therefore have absolutely no hesitation in recommending Carmen to massage whoever may be fortunate enough to cross paths.”

Alison Challis – Client

“I have never been truly comfortable with getting a massage. I am one of those people who normally avoid physical contact. In the past, when I have tried massage, I have become very upset and cried a lot, by my stress levels. I was nervous and even a little anxious prior to the treatment & was sure I’d get upset. I was to be very pleasantly surprised. Carmen’s treatment was like nothing I had experienced before. I instantly felt I was in the hands of a professional. I had a strong sense of trust, that everything would be okay. She really helped me to let go and relax into the treatment through her calmness and by helping me breathe. Not long into the massage I started to experience a feeling of joy. I was so surprised. I started grinning and totally let myself go. I felt wonderful & empowered afterwards. I believe Carmen is a natural healer who has dedicated herself to gaining knowledge of her trade. It certainly shows on the work she did on me. I loved it. Thanks Carmen.”

Both bodies relax –  leading to an efficient and harmonious flow of energy though the rivers of life.

Moving with the seasons, and supporting natural health with the elements –health and life force flows.

I purchased the book ‘The Zen of Touch’ written by Gwyn Williams (Founder of Zen Thai Shiatsu) and I just had to know more…so the journey began. I spent the next 2 years diving deep into anything Zen Thai here on the sunshine coast and in Bali. I graduated as a Zen Thai shiatsu therapist in 2013.

My goal as a therapist is to share with you loving kindness through focused intention and mindful touch, to gently move and stretch your body to its limits to create space in the joints and move qi throughout the body, to allow a nurturing space for your mind and body to slow down, connect, open and heal itself.

At a time in my life when I was so busy and maybe a little bit broken I found stillness in this movement and I would like to share this during my treatments.”
